Veronica Estrada was born to the beat of cumbia, the sound of Mexican ranchera, the beats of Tupac Shakur, as she was growing up in South Central Los Angeles as she was raised by her mother of El Salvador and a father from Mexico. Seeing her mother working hard just to provide food on the table, she always knew she had to work really hard to go college, but she never really knew how it was going to happen, the same struggle that many first generation college students always face.
Overall, she excelled in her studies being valedictorian of middle and high school at Foshay Learning Center and also graduating from the Neighborhood Academic Initiative. Through one of her classes with her professor Mr. Beebe, she was inspired to go to Brazil after she had taken on the role of making a short film about social activist like Marina Silva, and after she was exposed to the sound of forro, bossa nova, and reggae.
Thus started the cultural exploration of her own identity and her surrounding community, both USC and her local neighborhood. She continues to work in the local schools as an instructor and really advocates higher education for students in the community.
